In a rural village area certain occasions and events remain special in the history of the area. The GAA has always been an integral part of life for the people of Milford and has enjoyed great success in the past century. One of those special victories was the Cork County Intermediate Hurling title in 1982. The Milford team, in the words of Michael Ellard of the Irish Examiner, powered to victory over Erins Own on the score line of 4-7 to 1-5. The game was played in yielding underfoot conditions in Fermoy with Erins Own going into the game as favourites to win, however Milford showed an abundance of heart, endeavour, strength and skill to take the title for the first time in their illustrious history. The game attracted a large attendance of over 2000 people with current County Board Secretary Frank Murphy refereeing. Milford gained control of the game at midfield early on and the backs barred Erins Own path to goal. In the forward line some very accurate free taking and scores from play powered Milford ahead of the opposition. In the words of Michael Ellard referring to the Milford victory, no one but no one could deny them the right to be crowned champions just 12 months after climbing to the top of the junior tree. Indeed those were tremendous years for all in the Milford area with a great sense of pride in the local area in the success of our hurlers. The cup was presented to Mossie Fitzgibbon, captain, by the Chairman of the Cork County Board Mr. Derry Gowan, much to the delight of the large assembled Milford following. The 1982 team was as follows: P.Murphy, P O Gorman, S O Gorman, F O Connell, M Murphy, J Dillon, D Roche, M Fitzgibbon, P Madigan, V Sheehan, S Sheehan, N Fitzgibbon, P Buckley, T Sheehan and J O Gorman.
Under 14 team 1957-1958
Looking at the history of our local area it is important to acknowledge and recognise deeds of sporting excellence. In 1957 and 1958 an under 14 team made up of players from Milford, Freemount and Tullylease combined to win the County Final in 1958 and two North Cork titles in 1957 and 1958. The teams were organised, motivated and trained by the esteemed late Patrick Donegan R.I.P., former Principal of Milford Primary School. In 1957 Milford parish team defeated Killavullen in the North Cork U-14 final. This was to set the team on an unstoppable march to the first ever County Championship title for the parish in 1958.
Having again won the North Cork title for the second year in a row Kilbolane defeated Cobh in the County Semi- Final setting up a County Final clash against North Mon in Cork, the nursery of the famous Glen Rovers hurling club whose senior players included Jack Lynch, Josie Hartnett, Johnny Clifford and the legendary Christy Ring. The 58 final was played in Mallow and attracted a massive attendance from Milford parish. Kilbolane had a superb victory on a 7-2 to 1-3 scoreline. The team lined out as follows: J J Sexton, Eamon Newman, Nick Roche, Michael O Sullivan, Michael Glover, Willie Collins, Moss O Connor, Martin Geary, Dave O Leary, Terry Mc Mahon, Jim Geary, Donie Carroll, Tim Cronin, Jack Carroll, Eddie Collins, Tim Mullane, Ed Broderick, Frank Hennigan, Paddy Geary, Tony Sheehan.
